Summer Student Scholarship Program

For more than two decades, VCMRF has had the privilege of offering an extraordinary summer work experience to outstanding college students who are interested in careers in health care-- the Summer Student Scholarship Program. Students enroll in an eight-week program during which they work alongside physicians and other health care professionals. They observe a variety of environments including:  trauma in the emergency room, surgical procedures in the operating room, special care for patients in the ICU, outpatient care in the county's satellite clinic system, and postmortem exams in the medical examiner’s office.  Students are also assisted in developing a research project in an area of their interest. They spend approximately one-half of their time in the clinical setting, and one-half of their time working on the research project.  At the end of their eight weeks in the program, the results of the research are presented at a medical conference.

Medical Education

VCMC Pathology Department to fund books, tuition, ancillary fees and essential school equipment which will allow the recipients to continue their education towards a degree for lab employees.

Ventura County Physicians

Personal Digital Assistant (P.D.A.) w/drug database: up-to-date information at the touch of a button on the latest medications, practice protocols and medical references for physicians & interns.

Nursing Administration, Ventura County Medical Center

Association for Practitioners of Infection Control (APIC): updating Infection Control on current information about SARS, West Nile Virus, isolation, and other life-saving practices for the benefit of our community.

Nursing Education

• Advanced Medical/Surgical Nursing Conference Series: classes for medical/surgical nurses to help qualify them for certification and prepare them for the complexity of caring for medical/surgical patients.
• ACLS-PALS Training Equipment: Promotes life-saving training of CPR for adults and children, pediatric IV’s and infant intubations.
• Nursing Information Session for High School Counselors from Tri-Counties: encouraging career opportunities in nursing.

Las Islas Medical Group

• Sponsorship of “Understanding the Oaxacan/Mexican Community: providing medical exams, referrals & health-care education to Oaxacan immigrants who have no access to medical care in Ventura County.
• Funding of educational training sessions for Mixteco-Spanish interpreters Mixteco/Indigena Community Organization Project.
